David L. Thacker passed away on December 27, 2022 at the age of 73 in his hometown of Ellensburg, Washington. Dave had a long, courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis and succumbed to a short fight with pneumonia. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Susan, three children (Jennifer Main, Larry Thacker, Mark Thacker), five grandchildren, and three brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents Larry and Polly Thacker (Wells).
Dave was born in Ellensburg on June 27, 1949. He grew up on a farm in Grandview, Washington with three brothers (Dennis, Steve and Tony) and times were always exciting at the Thacker house! Before graduating in 1967, Dave broke the pole vault record at Grandview High School and held the record for over 20 years. After high school Dave enlisted in the Air Force and spent time in the Philippines as a morse code interceptor.
After his service Dave moved to Alaska along with much of his family. Dave had an exciting career over the decades and was never afraid to try something new. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline, on various fishing and crabbing boats, in transportation, and had his own carpet installation and firearms businesses. Dave returned to Ellensburg with Susan and his children in 1988 and has called Ellensburg home ever since.
Dave was known for his sense of humor, generosity, and caring nature. He was the first one to help a friend in need with nothing expected in return. He never had a boring conversation—he said what he thought and made people laugh. He was an avid trap shooter in both Alaska and Washington, winning the 1979 Alaska State Doubles title. He was passionate about teaching gun safety and spreading the joy of trap and target shooting with others. He enjoyed photography and had a soft spot in his heart for animals.
Dave was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and cousin who loved his family very much. He was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed by many.
