Dr. Jim Shaw, Dc

October 3, 1950 — August 5, 2022

Dr. Jim Shaw, 71, lifetime Ellensburg resident, passed away after a short illness on Friday, August 5, 2022 at the Providence Medical Center in Everett.  A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at the Nodding Donkey, 1514 W. University Way in Ellensburg.  Jim will be laid to rest in a private family service at the IOOF Cemetery.

Jim was born on October 3, 1950 in Ellensburg to Frederick & Maxine (Hay) Shaw.  He grew up in the valley and attended school in Ellensburg. Jim was a very talented athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball for Ellensburg High School, graduating from EHS with the class of 1969.  Following graduation, Jim attended Central Washington University where he double majored in math and science, followed by his education at National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Illinois where he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree.

After graduation from National College of Chiropractic, Jim returned to Ellensburg where he practiced under Dr. Tran Paza for a few years before opening Shaw Chiropractic Center.  Jim was well known and respected by the community and his patients for his dedicated care. He loved his patients and was known for his compassion, and was often making house calls or working after hours to help those in need. He was a longtime member of the Washington State Chiropractic Association and the American Chiropractic Association and officially retired in April 2021 after 45 years of care to his community.

Jim married Debbie Dillard on December 27, 1980 and was blessed with four children - Brian, Cody, Cory and Holly.  That marriage ended and after an 8 year courtship Jim and Julia Powell were married on July 16, 2011. It was then that Jim welcomed Julia’s two children that included, son Damon Powell and daughter Shanna Hampshire to his family.

Jim loved anything having to do with being outdoors, especially camping. That included his passion for big game hunting-primarily deer and elk- and was a long time member of the Kittitas County Field and Stream Club.  Always up for a good hunting story, Jim cherished times around the campfire with family and friends. He was fondly known as “Doc” to his closest friends.

Jim is survived by his wife, Julia, at their family home in Ellensburg; children Brian (Molly Monroe) Shaw of Renton, Cody (Michelle) Shaw of Ellensburg, Cory (Ryan) Chism of Moses Lake, Holly (Liki Tiatia) Shaw of Tacoma, Damon Powell of Ellensburg and Shanna (John) Hampshire of Moses Lake; his mother Maxine Shaw of Ellensburg; siblings Cyndie (Glenn Richardson) Phillips of Deer Park and Bob (Maureen Baker) Shaw of Rainier; grandchildren Maddie, Jo, Callie, Jaxon, Baylee, Colton, Peyton, Malosi, Weston, Crue, Nash, Dillon and Caiden, Matt, Kadence, Josh and Olivia as well as a very large extended family of nieces, nephews and dear friends. Jim was preceded in death by his father Fred and brother Steve.

Memorial contributions in Jim’s honor are suggested to Kittitas County Field and Stream Club, PO Box 522, Ellensburg, Washington 98926.
