Evelyn Jane Underwood, 90, longtime Cle Elum area resident, passed away at her home on Tuesday, September 15, 2020. A private family graveside service will be held and Evelyn will be laid to rest at the Laurel Hill Memorial Park in Cle Elum.
Evelyn was born on July 27, 1930 in Emmons County, North Dakota, the middle of seven children born to Roy & Lila (Paine) Scott. In 1933, her parents moved the family to the Kittitas Valley and Evelyn grew up and completed her schooling through the eighth grade. She married Delbert Henson in 1944 and they moved to a 160-acre farm east of Kittitas where they grew hay and raised cattle before moving to Maple Valley in 1955. That marriage later ended in divorce.
Evelyn married Orrin Underwood in 1972 in Everett and they continued to make their home in Maple Valley until Orrin’s retirement in 1976. They then became “sunbirds”, following the nice weather around the country with their camper, and spent time in Alaska, Washington and Arizona. Mr. Underwood passed away in 2000 and Evelyn has made Cle Elum her permanent home since that time.
Evelyn enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and was an avid horseshoe player. Many of the trips she and Orrin took were on the “horseshoe tournament circuit” and she won many trophies for her skills. She also enjoyed visiting swap meets while in Arizona.
Evelyn is survived by her son Karl (Susan) Henson of Renton; daughter Sharon White of Georgia; brother Arthur Scott of Raleigh, North Carolina; sisters Grace Bussoli of Pullman and Letticia (Willis) Gapen of Sequim as well as four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Orrin, sister Dorothy and brothers Sam and Virgil.
Memorial contributions in Evelyn’s honor are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice. Johnston & Williams Funeral Home and Crematory of Cle Elum has been entrusted with caring for Evelyn’s family. Online condolences may be left at www.johnston-williams.com
