Geraldine “Jerry” Bennett, 88, lifetime Ellensburg resident, passed away at Hearthstone Cottage on Thursday, August 26, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Viewing for family and friends will be from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at Johnston & Williams Funeral Home in Ellensburg. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at the IOOF Cemetery in Ellensburg.
Jerry was born on May 1, 1933 in Ellensburg, Washington to Ervan & Margaret (McKenzie) Harrel. She grew up in Thorp and attended school there, graduating from Thorp High School in 1951. She married her high school sweetheart, Hugh Bennett, on June 15, 1951 and they made their home briefly on the farm in the Thorp area before moving into Ellensburg in 1952.
Jerry worked as a bookkeeper, teller and loan assistant for Rainier Bank for 18 years before retiring. In retirement, Jerry and Hugh enjoyed traveling on their motorcycle, visiting Canada, Tennessee and most of the southern United States. As Jerry would say “We went wherever we took a notion.” She enjoyed gardening, sewing and spent a lot of time caring for many children over the years.
Jerry is survived by her sisters Erva (Steve) Hatfield and Irene (App) Legg of Ellensburg; grandson Shane and granddaughter Angel; two great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law Denice Bennett and Sherry Benedetti as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hugh, her son Robert and her son Alan (who passed away on June 27, 2021) as well as her sister Marjorie West.
The family wishes to express special thanks to Kelly Kastning-Moe for the loving care she provided Jerry while she was undergoing cancer treatments in Seattle. Gratitude is also due to the cancer team at the UW Medical Center, Dr. Jamin Feng and to the staff and nurses of both Hearthstone Cottage and KVH Hospice who were all exceptional with their care.
Memorial contributions are suggested to KVH Hospice, 1506 E. Radio Road or to The Gretchen Weller Foundation, PO Box 1762, both in Ellensburg.
Johnston & Williams Funeral Home and Crematory of Ellensburg has been entrusted with caring for Jerry and her family. Online condolences may be left at www.johnston-williams.com
