John Thompson

May 22, 1931 — November 8, 2017

John W. "Jack" Thompson, 86, Ellensburg resident for over fifty years, passed away on November 8, 2017, at Cottage in the Meadow Hospice in Yakima. A Celebration of Life reception will be held Saturday, November 18, 2017, from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Ellensburg American Legion Hall.

Jack was born May 22, 1931, in Fillmore, North Dakota, to Marcus and Gertrude (Iverson) Thompson. He was the second to youngest of seven children. He grew up in Fillmore and Bowbells, North Dakota, and graduated from Bowbells High School in 1949. Before graduating, Jack met Shirley Ann Wolen. They courted for more than four years, before marrying on May 29, 1951. Jack worked for area farmers and tended the grain elevators during harvests before he and Shirley bought the Border Bar just south of the US-Canadian border. After more than a decade of running the bar, the couple and three young daughters moved to Ellensburg in 1961. Jack worked as a union carpenter, and was often found helping friends and family with every repair and maintenance need imaginable. Much of his handiwork is still seen around Ellensburg in buildings on campus as well as the hospital.

A master at crossword puzzles and all things mathematical, Jack's happiest days were hunting and fishing with three generations of family by his side. Jack enjoyed happy hours with his friends at the American Legion Hall, and was known for his warm smile, mischievious nature, honest words, and (extremely) firm handshake. Every day of his life was filled with life, laughter, and love - Norwegian style.

Jack is survived by his best friend and wife of 66 years, Shirley; daughters Ramona (Robert) Tyma of Ocala, Florida, and Debi Leslie of Ellensburg; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Grace Johnson of Stanley, ND. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Toman, his parents, and five siblings. Memorial contributions in Jack's honor are suggested to the Life Support Fund, c/o Kittitas Valley Fire & Rescue, PO Box 218, Ellensburg, WA 98926. Steward & Williams Tribute Center has been entrusted with caring for Jack's family.
