Lawrence Buchanan

June 19, 1931 — March 10, 2018

Lawrence "Toby" Gray Buchanan, 86, longtime resident of Easton, WA passed away on March 10, 2018 at Hearthstone Cottage Assisted Living in Ellensburg.

Toby was born on June 19, 1931 to Robert Gray Buchanan and Revonda Arizona (Johnson) Dellinger, in Banner Elk, North Carolina. He grew up in the Plum Tree area of Avery County, North Carolina, until the age of 12 when he moved to Rockport, Washington, with his mother and step-father Jeff Dellinger. He completed his schooling in Rockport before starting to drive logging trucks in his teenage years.

Toby married Ruth Harris in Sedro Woolley, WA in 1951 and from this union born to them were one daughter, Carolyn, and three sons; Robert, Hank, and Doug.

In 1969 Toby married Donna Clement in Coeur d'Alene, ID. From this union born to them was one son, Larry Buchanan. Toby and Donna raised her children Roy and Becky Williams along with their son in Easton, WA where they moved in 1969.

Toby spent his whole career as a logging truck driver before his retirement in 1990. Toby loved driving his rig and was meticulous about its care. If you asked him what kind of truck driver he was, he'd say "logging truck" but he also did some long haul driving and snow plowing when things were slow in the woods. He also enjoyed tinkering on things - cars, trucks, tractors - and was always working on a project of sorts.

Toby enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and left everyone he loved with many special memories. He was a very strong and resilient man, having fought and beat cancer four times before his last diagnosis.

Toby is survived by his beloved children, Carolyn Buchanan of Lyman, WA; Hank (Nancy) Buchanan of Cullowhee, NC; Larry (Jennifer) Buchanan of Cle Elum; Roy (Patty) Williams of Cusick, WA and Becky (Ed) Manni of Spokane. He is survived by his siblings, Tommy (Sally) Dellinger of Rockport, WA; Gracie Nieshe of Birdsview, WA; Ellen "Gay" LaFayette of Wales, WI; Mike (Sonja) Dellinger of Curlew, WA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jeremy & Chad Buchanan, Layne& Christina Buchanan, Celeste Newell, Anna Van Corbach, Zach & Anthony Manni, Nicole & Tara Buchanan, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons Robert L. Buchanan and Doug Buchanan, his parents Robert G. Buchanan and Revonda Dellinger, step-father Jeff Dellinger, his brothers Doug and Bruce Dellinger.

Viewing was Friday, March 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cascade Funeral Home in Cle Elum. A graveside service followed the viewing at 2:00 p.m. at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Cle Elum.
