Philip Demaintenon

April 25, 1928 — July 14, 2018

Philip Arthur deMaintenon died peacefully at Pacifica Senior Living Center in Ellensburg, WA on Saturday, July 14th.

Phil was born on April 25, 1928 to Martta Josefina Ruutunen and Edward Harry deMaintenon (Maunton) in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. He was the youngest of four brothers. He joined the Army after graduation and served as a Japanese interpreter, serving in the Japanese reconstruction after World War II.

He met the love of his life, Dorothy Ruth Mayer in Syracuse, NY. They were married in May of 1948 after a whirlwind courtship, and together they raised three children. Phil worked at General Electric his entire career, starting at the Syracuse Electronics Park and then transferring to the locomotive division in Erie, PA. After his retirement, he and Dorothy left Pennsylvania and traveled the country for a year before settling in Franklin, NC. Phil enjoyed reading, music, woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family and friends. While he and Dorothy lived in New York, he was very involved in the building committee at St. Mark's Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge in their hometown of Baldwinsville. After retiring from General Electric, he became very active in the Better Hearing Group of Macon County, NC, a support group for the hearing impaired. After sixty two years of marriage, Dorothy succumbed to the ravages of Alzheimer's and Phil's health started to decline a few years later. He relocated to Ellensburg, WA to be close to family.

A beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, Phil leaves behind his son Dean and wife Shelley of Ellensburg, WA; daughter Cheryl MacEwen and her husband Matt of Glastonbury, CT; and daughter Marta of Hilo, HI. He also leaves behind his five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his three brothers Gene, Ralph and Tom. The family will celebrate his life at a private service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations be made to either the BrightFocus Foundation in Clarksburg, MD. or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America in New York, NY. A very special thank you to the kind and compassionate staff at Pacifica Senior Living of Ellensburg LLC and Hospice for their excellent support and care. Steward & Williams Funeral Home and Crematory of Ellensburg is caring for the family. Online condolences may be left at www.steward-williams.com
