Ruth S. Floyd, age 91, of Ellensburg, Washington died March 15, 2021.
She was born Elsie Ruth Schultz, daughter of Mildred Robinson and Clarence Schultz, on February 1, 1930 in Merced Falls, CA. The family moved to Oregon where Ruth graduated from Albany High School. She attended Linfield College and graduated from Western Oregon University. For two years she taught elementary school in Eugene, OR. Ruth married William Downing Floyd in 1950.
An active homemaker, Ruth enjoyed following her children’s activities and became a sports enthusiast. She also enjoyed volunteer activities in the community and was a many year active member of Friday Club, a girl scout leader, and a member of Chapter BF of P.E.O. She served a six-year term on the Kittitas Valley Hospital Board. As a member of the Presbyterian Church, Ruth sang in the choir for thirty years and served as a trustee, an elder, and clerk.
Ruth was always ready for a game of bridge. She enjoyed a competitive game and achieved the American Contract Bridge League rank of Life Master.
Survivors include John (Jane) Floyd, Spokane, WA; Anna (Win) Charlton, Ellensburg, WA; son-in-law Rick McKiernan, Livingston, MT; Martha (Bobby) Tenery, Tucson, AZ; Frank (Tina) Floyd, Kingsburg, CA; Jed Floyd, Tucson, AZ; stepsister Carmen Quakenbush; stepbrother Lee Chase; her grandchildren Brennan, Anne, Ryan (Kristin), Paul (Jessie), Nea (Mario), Jill, Kay (George), Max, Mia, Rachel (fiancé Bryan), and Hannah. Ruth is also survived by nine great grandchildren. In addition to her husband Bill Floyd, parents, stepfather Cecil Chase, and brother Edward Schultz, she was preceded in death by daughter Sally McKiernan.
The family expresses considerable gratitude to Hearthstone and Fieldstone Memory Care for their care of Ruth during her final years. Those wishing to honor Ruth Floyd’s memory may contribute to CWU Foundation (William D. Floyd scholarship), Kittitas Valley Hospital Foundation or Ellensburg Presbyterian Church.
Private family services will be held at the IOOF Cemetery and a recording will be available on the funeral home website at a later date. Please know that the personal relationships that sustained Ruth’s happy life are greatly appreciated by the family.
